Off-Road GPS

Mapping company Magellan has something new for the perpetually dirty. Its an Off-Road Navigation Platform that allows you to plan and track your routes off-road.

Quote:
The Off-Road Vehicle Navigation Platform gives users access to several unique features. For starters Perini said it should deliver “the most comprehensive set of trail maps” in the industry, which is hugely important when venturing through the bush.

Magellan has mapped trails in all 50 states and across the provinces of Canada. Also included are things like 3D terrain details and elevation lines; borders for national, state or provincial parks; service roads to and from these places; the location of scenic byways; and even user-provided trail information.

Anyone know if there are any apps that might offer such a feature?

I think with Windows phone and Nokia HERE maps, you can download the maps to use offline and then still access the GPS signal. That should duplicate what this is doing?

AFAIK this is the only application of this type. Is it possible to combine several other tools to equal this, perhaps, will it work as well, not sure... Are the Nokia maps as detailed topography wise as Magellan makes theirs sound?

I do know that other maps show terrain, but usually not well. This system should be trying to do it better.
